Steve Jobs limited his kids’ screen time. Can I?

I read a great article that appeared in the New York Times, which reveals how some of the biggest leaders in the tech industry, including the late Steve Jobs, did not allow a technology free-for-all at home. In fact, quite the opposite; these tech titans are acutely aware of the benefits of reining in kids’ screen time at home to make room for the important stuff, like real-life conversations, homework and (although not mentioned in the article), physical activity.

Depression is a common illness that can be overcome

When it comes to understanding the prevalence of depression, the statistics speak for themselves. Experts say that 5% to 12% of all men will experience an episode of major depression at some point in their lives. The statistics are even worse for women, at 10% to 25%. At this very moment, hundreds of thousands of Canadians are suffering from depression. Unfortunately, many of them will never be diagnosed.

A big part of the problem lies with the diagnosis itself. Doctors often don’t detect depression because it’s masked by the more visible problems, like insomnia or weight loss. But in most cases, depression is an illness that can be overcome, and when a person receives the appropriate care, they can go on to lead a happy, normal life. Read more »
